The World Happiness Report is made possible by a collaboration between Gallup, the Oxford Wellbeing Research Centre, the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and the Editorial Board of the World Happiness Report.

In the World Happiness Report, we focus on the happiness of people at different stages of life. In the seven ages of man in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, the later stages of life are portrayed as deeply depressing. India is listed as the 126th country on the World Happiness Report, falling behind nations like Libya, Iraq, Palestine, and Niger. This was revealed on Wednesday to mark the UN’s International Day of Happiness.

India was placed 126th out of 143 nations in a happiness index released on Wednesday. The index mentioned that older people tend to be more satisfied with life in India, which has a large population.

In India, young people are the happiest, while those in the “lower middle” category are the least happy.

In India, as people get older, they tend to feel happier with their lives, which goes against the idea that only wealthier countries have this trend.

Key Insights of India’s World Happiness Report

  • Overall, older men in India are happier than older women, but when we look at other factors, older women feel more satisfied with their lives.
  • Older adults in India who have at least finished secondary school and those from higher social groups tend to feel happier with their lives compared to those without much education and those from lower social groups.
  • Feeling good about where they live, not feeling discriminated against, and rating their health positively are the main things that predict how satisfied older adults in India feel with their lives.

The report mentioned that India has the second-largest older population globally, with 140 million people aged 60 and over, coming after China with 250 million. Also, the number of Indians aged 60 and above is growing three times faster than the overall population of the country.

According to the report, what makes people in India feel satisfied with their lives are mainly how they feel about where they live, if they feel they are treated unfairly, and how they rate their health.

What is the US’s position on the happiest country list?
The United States has dropped out of the top 20 for the first time since the World Happiness Report started in 2012. This was mainly because younger Americans were not feeling as happy as before.

Pakistan’s position in the Happiest Country List

Pakistan is ranked 108th on the list. Afghanistan is still at the bottom of the list as the world’s unhappiest country.

The report now includes rankings for different age groups, which can be quite different from the overall rankings. Lithuania is ranked highest for children and young people under 30, while Denmark is considered the happiest country for those aged 60 and older.
