International Women’s Day Date

March 8th is International Women’s Day (IWD), a day to celebrate the efforts and achievements of women around the world in the social, political, cultural, and economic domains.

International Women’s Day History

International Women’s Day was first recognized in the early 1900s, a time of great social change characterized by fast industrialization and the rise of radical ideologies. Women started actively advocating for reform in 1908 as knowledge of the injustice and unfairness faced by women grew.

The holiday, which has roots dating back to 1911, catalyzes social reform and advances gender equality.

Notably, 15,000 women marched in New York City to call for better working conditions, such as fewer hours worked, higher wages, and the ability to vote. The next year, February 28th, was commemorated nationwide as the inaugural National Woman’s Day, per a proclamation issued by the Socialist Party of America. Until 1913, women carried on this custom on the final Sunday of February.

Clara Zetkin presented the concept of an International Women’s Day in 1910 at the Second International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. She pushed for a global celebration that would support the demands of women.

The conference attendees, who included over 100 women from 17 different nations and represented unions, socialist parties, and working women’s clubs, unanimously.

Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland were the first countries to formally recognize International Women’s Day in 1911, following a resolution passed at the Copenhagen conference in Denmark.

International Women’s Day-related colours

Originally inspired by women’s movements for change, International Women’s Day dates back to the early 1900s. The colours purple, green, and white stand for justice, hope, and purity, respectively.

Purple, green, and white are the colours linked with International Women’s Day; each has a symbolic meaning. Green is a symbol of hope, and Purple stands for justice and dignity. White is a controversial colour that represents purity.

It should be mentioned additionally that Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book “The Color Purple” explores themes of race, gender, and identity while chronicling the life of a young African American woman in the South in the early 20th century.

In 1908, the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the United Kingdom selected these colours.
