Maldives got into trouble after messing with India and went bankrupt
Big Trouble for the Maldives: The Maldives is badly trapped by messing with India. Recently, something has happened to the Maldives that even it would not have thought about.
President Mohammed Muizzu of the Maldives and ‘India Out’ campaign

The ongoing disagreement between India and the Maldives remains unresolved. President Mohammed Muizzu of the Maldives intentionally initiated the ‘India Out’ campaign, aiming to antagonize India by planning to remove Indian soldiers from the country. By May 10, these soldiers will be replaced by qualified technical staff from India.
PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep
Additionally, during Indian PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, three Maldivian ministers made controversial remarks about PM Modi and Indians. Although these ministers were later dismissed, Muizzu did not disavow their comments. The Maldives’ actions have stirred trouble with India, leading to significant repercussions for the nation.
Maldives went bankrupt
The Maldives has declared bankruptcy, as reported recently. The nation has notified the International Monetary Fund (IMF) about its financial crisis and has requested a bailout.

Demand for bailout
Following its bankruptcy, the Maldives has turned to the IMF for a bailout loan. The nation’s economy, already under strain, suffered further after tensions with India, ultimately leading to bankruptcy. In response to this dire situation, the Maldives has requested financial assistance from the IMF to address its economic woes.
Maldives and India Relation
Messing with India has proven to be a costly endeavour for the Maldives. Once enjoying amicable relations, the presidency of Muizzu marked a turning point, with relations deteriorating rapidly. Muizzu’s anti-India stance led to his adamant pursuit of removing the Indian army from the Maldives.
Additionally, controversial comments made by Maldivian ministers following PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep further fueled anger among Indians. As a result, a substantial number of Indians began to voice opposition against the Maldives.
This backlash extended to tourism, with notable figures and travellers cancelling their trips to the Maldives. Consequently, Indian tourism to the Maldives plummeted, causing a significant decline in visitor numbers. Last year, Indian travellers ranked highest in visits to the Maldives, but this year, India has dropped to fifth place. The decline in Indian tourism to the Maldives observed in January is expected to persist.
The Maldives has faced repercussions not only in tourism but also in crucial sectors like healthcare and education, where it heavily relies on support from India. The situation has reached a point where the Maldives is seeking assistance from Sri Lanka for emergency medical needs.
Pakistan and Maldives
Despite its economic challenges, Pakistan has extended an offer to help the Maldives. However, accepting aid from China, while seemingly beneficial in the short term, could lead to long-term consequences for the Maldives. In essence, the Maldives has inflicted harm upon itself by stirring tensions with India.
The Muizzu government and China agreement
The Muizzu government’s lack of transparency regarding four agreements with China raises suspicions of ulterior motives, possibly targeting India.
Relations between India and the Maldives: Media reports suggest that the Maldives have entered into undisclosed agreements with China. This reluctance to disclose these agreements by the Muizzu government suggests underlying concerns about their implications for India-Maldives relations.
I will repeat India’s stance:
India wants to be friends with its neighbours and promises not to interfere in their business. The main goal is to have peace and respect and work together for development in the South Asian region.
India is also focused on keeping the Indian Ocean safe and secure. Especially for countries like the Maldives, India wants to help with their overall progress. By making sure the ocean is stable and supporting sustainable growth, India aims to create a peaceful and prosperous region.
In short, India’s foreign policy is all about being good neighbours, respecting each other’s space, and working together for a safer and better future in the South Asian region.
