Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on Saturday that BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani will be conferred the Bharat Ratna at the age of 96. PM Modi congratulated him on being conferred this honour and shared an X post.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister wrote, “I am very happy to share that Shri LK Advani Ji will be conferred the Bharat Ratna. I also spoke to him and congratulated him on being conferred this honour.”
“One of the most respected statesmen of our time, his contribution to the development of India is monumental. This is a life that started from working at the grassroots to serving the nation as our Deputy Prime Minister,” PM Modi said.
The Prime Minister further praised the veteran leader and said he distinguished himself as India’s Home Minister and I&B Minister. “His parliamentary interventions have always been exemplary, full of rich insights.”
He said Advani’s decades-long service in public life has been marked by an unwavering commitment to transparency and integrity, setting an exemplary standard in political ethics.
“He has made unparalleled efforts towards furthering national unity and cultural resurgence. The conferring of the Bharat Ratna on him is a very emotional moment for me. I will always consider it my privilege that I got countless opportunities to interact with him and learn from him,” PM Modi said.
LK Advani: When and where Born
Born in Karachi, in present-day Pakistan, on November 8, 1927, Advani has served as the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party for the longest period since its inception in 1980.
Capping a parliamentary career of nearly three decades, he was, first, the Home Minister and, later, the Deputy Prime Minister in the cabinet of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1999–2004).
Advani is widely regarded as an individual of great intellectual ability, strong principles, and unwavering support for the idea of a strong and prosperous India.
As confirmed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Advani has ‘never compromised on his core belief in nationalism, and yet has displayed flexibility in political responses whenever it was demanded by the situation’.

BHARAT RATNA

Bharat Ratna, or ‘Jewel of India’ is the highest civilian award in the country. It is conferred for exceptional service to the nation in various fields such as science, the arts, literature, and recognition of public service of the highest order. The award can be granted posthumously, and since its establishment, seven awards have been granted posthumously.
HISTORY OF BHARAT RATNA
The award was established by former President of India Rajendra Prasad on January 2, 1954.
The concept of awarding this award posthumously was not in the original statute declared in January 1954.
Provision to award posthumously was finally added to the January 1966 statute of this prestigious award.
The first Bharat Ratna was awarded to Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, Sir C.V. Raman, and Chakravarti Rajagopalachari in 1954.
Sachin Tendulkar is the first sportsperson and the youngest Bharat Ratna Award recipient.
THE AWARD
The medallion is cast in bronze.
The medallion is designed like the leaf of a pipal tree with a sunburst in the centre, and Bharat Ratna is engraved underneath it.
On the backside, the emblem of India is embossed, and Satyameva Jayate is inscribed in Devanagari script.
The medallion is worn around the neck using a white ribbon.
The award does not carry any monetary endowment.
WHO ARE ALL ENTITLED TO GET BHARAT RATNA?
The award was initially restricted to accomplishments in literature, science, the arts, and public services, but the government of India expanded the conditions to encompass “any field of human endeavour” in 2011.
There is no written provision that Bharat Ratna should be awarded to Indian citizens only.
Recently, the Government of India has altered guidelines for the eligibility of persons from the sports field for the Bharat Ratna.
WHO DECIDES?
The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister to the President.
The number of yearly awards is constrained to a maximum of three in a specific year.
