Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a staunch advocate of peace and non-violence, got married to Kasturba at the age of 13. He pursued a legal education at the Inner Temple in London and later moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a legal case. During his 21-year stay in South Africa, Gandhi began employing non-violent resistance in a civil rights campaign.

Returning to India in 1915, Gandhi began organizing farmers and urban laborers to protest against discrimination, launching the Satyagraha and Ahimsa movements against British colonial rule. His non-violent methods and ability to inspire change through love and tolerance significantly influenced civil rights movements.

Devoting his life to India’s struggle for independence, Gandhi also led campaigns against untouchability and poverty, advocating for women’s rights. Tragically, on January 30, 1948, while on his way to an evening prayer meeting at Birla Bhavan, Delhi, Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, fired three fatal shots into Gandhi’s chest, resulting in his instant death.

The significance of Mahatma Gandhi extends globally, with his principles of peace and non-violence celebrated on his birth anniversary, October 2, observed as the International Day of Non-Violence by the United Nations General Assembly since 2007. This day serves to raise awareness about the importance of non-violence in fostering worldwide peace, harmony, and unity.
