PM Narendra Modi:

Narendra Damodardas Modi, born on September 17, 1950, is an Indian politician who has been serving as the country’s 14th prime minister since May 2014. He is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Varanasi and was the chief minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. Modi is associated with the right-wing Hindu nationalist organization Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is the longest-serving prime minister from a party other than the Indian National Congress. Modi was born and raised in Vadnagar, northeastern Gujarat, where he completed his secondary education. He was introduced to the RSS at the age of eight. Modi has shared stories about his early job selling tea at the Vadnagar railway station.

Narendra Modi Government:

After becoming the chief minister of Gujarat in 2001, Modi was swiftly elected to the legislature. His administration has faced criticism for its handling of the situation and is believed to have been involved in the violence in Gujarat in 2002. Government records indicate that three-quarters of the roughly 1,000 victims were Muslims, while independent sources suggest that the death toll was closer to 2,000, with the majority being Muslim. In 2012, the Supreme Court of India established a Special Investigation Team to look into the matter; however, no evidence was found to press charges against him. While Modi’s initiatives as chief minister were praised for boosting the state’s economic growth, indicators related to health, poverty, and education did not show significant improvements.

In 2019, the Modi government launched the Balakot airstrike in retaliation to an alleged terrorist training camp in Pakistan. Despite the airstrike’s failure and the tragic loss of six Indian soldiers due to friendly fire, it stirred up nationalist sentiment. Modi’s party emerged victorious in the 2019 general election. During his second term, Modi’s administration revoked Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, granting India control over part of the disputed region. The controversial Citizenship Amendment Act was also passed, leading to widespread protests and the 2020 Delhi riots, where Hindu mobs targeted and killed Muslims.

In 2008, Modi authored a Gujarati book called Jyotipunj, which contains biographies of RSS leaders. The most extensive biography is of M. S. Golwalkar, whom Modi reveres as Pujniya Shri Guruji (“Guru worthy of worship”), under whose leadership the RSS expanded. The Economic Times asserts that Modi aimed to reassure RSS supporters of his ideological harmony while explaining the organization’s workings to his readers. Apart from penning the informative book Warriors, a valuable test companion for children, he assumed the role of Prime Minister. Modi has written eight more books, predominantly comprising collections of short stories for children. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also featured in the song “Abundance in Millets,” which has received a nomination.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024:

Today marks the beginning of voting to elect representatives for the 18th Lok Sabha. A total of 102 constituencies, spanning from Udhampur to Kanyakumari and Ganganagar to Itanagar, across 17 states and 4 Union Territories, are participating in the first phase of the seven-phase election. This phase is notable as it includes more than 100 seats. The opposition, united under the India bloc, is aiming to halt Modi’s progress, while the BJP-led NDA is aiming for a third consecutive victory.

Defending 43 seats: The NDA faces tough competition in 11 out of 12 Rajasthan seats, 5 out of 6 Madhya Pradesh seats, all 5 Uttarakhand seats, all 4 Bihar seats, 4 out of 5 Maharashtra seats, 3 out of 8 western Uttar Pradesh seats, and all 3 West Bengal seats. Out of these forty-three seats, the BJP won thirty-six, the LJP two, and one each for Shiv Sena (Shinde), JD(U), and northeastern allies. Prospective gains: The NDA is eyeing opportunities in Uttar Pradesh, where it aims to outperform its 2019 performance against the SP-BSP, as well as in Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. Additionally, it is also looking at gaining ground in Tamil Nadu, where its current alliance partners did not secure seats in 2019.
