Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay decided to quit films and devote his time to politics. On Friday, he announced the formation of a political party named “Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam,” or TVK. His desire to “fundamental political change” with a transparent, caste-free, and corruption-free government. In a long official statement, the actor said that there is a need for political power to do social work in a full-fledged manner.
The actor made the big announcement after his fan club, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, gave a nod to the formation of the political party in a meeting held in Chennai last week.
He said that he would quit cinema after completing two films (‘GOAT’ and an untitled film) to become a full-fledged politician in Tamil Nadu.
His party members will contest in the 2026 elections. In a statement issued by the actor, he said, “We are making an application today to the EC to register our party, ‘Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam’.
Our goal is to contest and win the upcoming 2026 assembly elections and bring about the fundamental political change that people want.”. The actor recently met Class 10 and 12 students and also offered aid to people affected by the recent floods in Chennai.
The actor’s official account on X posted: “You all are well aware of the political situation in Tamil Nadu. On one side, we have a dysfunctional administration and corrupt political culture, and on the other, we have divisive politics that aims to divide people along the lines of caste, creed, and religion. Both impact our progress. It is an incontestable truth that people, more so in Tamil Nadu, are longing for a change in a political scenario and want a selfless, honest, secular, and talented party to bring about a change.”

Vijay added, “Politics is not just another career for me. It is a sacred people’s work. I have been preparing myself for it for a long time. Politics is not a hobby for me. That is my deepest desire. I want to fully involve myself in it.”
Further explaining actor Vijay’s political move, the statement further said, “You are all aware of the current political climate. Government malpractices and corrupt political culture on the one hand, and a divisive political culture that strives to divide our people on the lines of caste and religion on the other hand. Everyone, especially in Tamil Nadu, is waiting for a fundamental political change that can lead to a selfless, transparent, caste-free, visionary, corruption-free, and efficient administration.”
After obtaining the approval of the Election Commission, the party plans to conduct public meetings and events. During these gatherings, they will present their policies, principles, and action plans, as well as introduce a flag and party symbol.
However, the actor stated that the party will neither be contesting the 2024 general elections nor supporting any party in the upcoming elections.
The statement further mentioned: “After the approval of the election ordinance, our party’s policies, manifestos, strategies, and programs will be known, and our political journey for the people of Tamil Nadu will be committed. Our party will proceed with the necessary diligence, ensuring that all activities align with the party’s mission and goals, prioritising the interests of the people of Tamil Nadu. Therefore, my prolonged commitment to politics is not merely a profession but a sacred duty to the people. Politics, in my perspective, is not a pastime; it is my profound endeavour.”
“So, I will complete the task I have accepted now, making sure that it doesn’t affect my political service to people. And I will embark on this journey to serve the people of Tamil Nadu fully, without any distractions. That, I believe, is my debt of gratitude to the people of Tamil Nadu, he added in the statement.
Vijay floated a political party to contest the 2026 Assembly polls. He also declared that he would be concentrating full-time on public life after completing a film for which he had already committed.
The 49-year-old actor, who is one of the highest-paid actors in the country and commands a huge fan base, said his party will neither contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections nor extend its support to any outfit. In a three-page statement, Vijay said he will make use of the next two years to prepare his fans and supporters battle-ready for the 2026 polls, strengthen the party infrastructure, and elect office-bearers in a “democratic manner.”
The announcement by Vijay was not surprising, as the actor had been preparing for his political outing for the past few months by constituting various wings for his Vijay Makkal Iyakkam, his fan club. The VMI already has 25 wings, and all of them were reactivated recently, while the actor also launched an IT wing and an advocacy wing to face the political challenge.
Vijay also joins the long list of actors who have joined politics in Tamil Nadu, starting with M. G. Ramachandran, J. Jayalalithaa, Sivaji Ganesan, Vijayakanth, and Kamal Haasan.
